Severance & St. Patrick (spoilers)

This is my first post ever on Reddit so apologies if i do something wrong, I think I’ve marked this whole post properly as a spoiler. Anyway, I think Severance is based on St. Patrick and here are some reasons why:

  • Light / Dark: The company’s name is Lumon. Lumen is Latin for light…legend says there was no darkness for 12 days after the death of St Patrick; Eagan means fiery and St Patrick risked his life to light an unquenchable fire for Easter (https://drivethruhistory.com/patricks-paschal-fire-on-the-hill-of-slane/)
  • Water: the Lumen symbol looks like a drop of water; St. Patrick performed miracles with water such as curing a blind man, and the rock he was baptized on would spurt water if someone lied while touching it (https://smithapplebyhouse.org/forgotten-miracles-of-saint-patrick/); also St. Patrick escaped from slavery by ship over the ocean
  • Eels in the sea: St Patrick was famous for driving the snakes of Ireland into the sea…this would explain Dylan’s theory that the numbers represent eels being blown up in the sea // Leviathans or sea monsters are images of the Devil and thus it makes sense that the company would metaphorically be destroying eels / snakes of the sea (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leviathan)
  • Paganism: St. Patrick converted the Pagans to Christianity; Hellene meant Pagan to the early Christian Church (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Names_of_the_Greeks#Hellene_comes_to_mean_%22pagan%22); Helly as an innie is the strongest opponent of Lumen
  • Resurrection: St. Patrick resurrected 33 people from the dead…similar to how some of the innies like Ms. Casey may be “resurrected” from a coma
  • Charlotte’s birthday: 3/17…St. Patrick’s Day / the day St. Patrick died
  • Eggs: St Patrick got attacked by demonic blackbirds while he was doing his fast on the mountain…Keir ate eggs every day / employees get egg parties…eating the embryonic version of birds is symbolic for him - a way to punish the birds (https://www.irishamericanmom.com/easter-stories-of-saint-patrick/)
  • Cross motif: the cubicles are all arranged in the shape of a cross which is the symbol of St. Patrick
  • Green: associated with St. Patrick’s Day; the carpets, furniture etc at Lumen are all green
  • Goats: St. Patrick was an animal herder and there are legends surrounding St. Patrick and goats (https://pilgrimagemedievalireland.com/tag/st-patrick-and-his-goat/)
