Getting braids as a sikh

I've been fully practicing Sikhi for about a year now, and my hair has grown quite long. It's starting to get in my eyes a lot when I'm at home, and I know you might wonder why I don't just tie it up. The thing is, my hair is uneven, so even when I tie it, it still falls into my face. I talked to my mother about it, and she suggested I try braids. I was wondering if that's a good idea?
