I have some support/span questions. I'm mostly looking to proof a concept before doing tons of work.
Hello, I have a couple questions regarding spanning a 40' length on a concrete block building.
I have some very rough plans drawn up, but before I get them engineered, I'd like to find out if what we're looking for is even possible.
My current concept is to build a 40x80 above grade concrete block building to serve as a shop/warehouse. The second floor will be a residence.
My understanding is that bar joists can handle the 40' span without support posts on the first floor, and that these can be joined to concrete block. I used chatGPT to do some calculations and it sounds like I can do this with a bar joist every 8' (google thinks 4' is necessary).
I suppose my question is, can bar joists accomplish a 40' span without support posts?
And, is 4' OC going to pose a challenge to the concrete walls the joists will be joined to?
If this doesn't belong here, I'm happy to email or go to chat.
Thank you.
