Family prying to figure out how much income we make. Is this normal in Thai culture?
My wife is Thai (born and raised), and I have have Thai ancestry as well (American born). On our recent trip back, my wife told me after a dinner that one of her aunts straight up point blanked asked her, “How much money do you guys make?”. She simply responded with, “We do OK,” then immediately changed subjects. A little while later we hooked up with her sister who started talking about tax brackets I guess (I can’t speak Thai). What my wife explained is that she immediately knew what her sister was trying to do, which was broadcast to my wife how much she was making by telling her what tax bracket she was in, with the expectation my wife would provide some kind of glimpse into our income in return (basically a pissing contest with her sister but feigning ignorance about what you’re really trying to do). Is this normal and acceptable cultural practice in Thailand to ask people how much money they make? In the west, it is highly offensive and a huge no-no. I’d also see how this could be a nightmare, if say you have a clingy family and they find out you made a lot of money (hypothetical scenario). Would they hound you nonstop for money and handouts?
