Plothole in the Day of Black Sun

I’m not sure if plothole is the right term but it’s close. So we all know that the Sozin’s Comet saga starts with Aang having an internal crisis about killing Ozai. BUT what was his plan during the invasion then. If it actually went as planned what would Aang have done if he faced the firelord? Genuine confusion over here
