why does everyone hate Matt?!

Genuine question. I’ve noticed that most of the fans hate on Matt and make jokes about him being ugly or useless. Even some of the cast members (Paul) makes fun of him. I get the jokes sometimes and it’s funny, but then I see people genuinely hating on the character AND the actor.

At first I thought there must be some controversy with the actor, like Alaric, but I couldn’t find anything related to that, since Zach Roerig seems to be a decently private person.

I’ve seen the show recently (keep in mind I haven’t finished it yet, so I don’t know the ending). I’ve always had a soft spot for Matt because he was the only one who was actually against vampires, and he was so dedicated to hating them which added a lot of realism. I mean, everyone else either became a vampire or fell in love with one, but with Matt, he really clung onto the hatred.

Do people hate him just because he hated vampires? Because if that’s so… why?! He was different and added a new perspective. And if there’s another reason, please share it with me because I’m a Matt Donovan girly and I want to know why he’s so hated.
