India's feminist discourse, today, still mirrors white feminism. It needs to be intersectional ASAP
There's a horrifying lack of inclusion of Dalit, Tribal and Minority women and perspectives in present-day discourse about Women's rights in India.
A Dalit and Minority woman lives at the intersection of Gender, Caste/Minority Community.
Their oppression is multifold. We've seen this time and time again, in the case of Manipur's Tribal Christian Women, in the case of Bilkis Bano, in the case of Dalit woman of Hathras SA case, to name a few.
And we need to recognise this reality that in India a woman's reality cuts across caste, class and minority communities' lines. Their gender identity can't be wrestled away from the woven reality of other forms of oppression they face because those aspects of oppression are heavily gendered as well.
I'm not sure if I'm touching a chord with anyone here. But I hope at least someone understands what I mean to say.
Edit: What are the steps we take to ensure that Dalit/ST/Minority women around us: in our locality, workspace, academic space, etc, feel safe and heard and not isolated and further humiliated and oppressed?
What steps do we take to include them as well move forward in our feminist discourse?
Do we take cognizance about the fact that many Indian women with a significant class/caste/majoritarian privilege can be oppressive towards women of the oppressed class/caste/communities? If we do, what precautions do we take to ensure a fair, equitable, safe space for the oppressed against the aforementioned abuses within our own environment?
