I don’t understand this character

Was just watching the searchers and I was so confused and annoyed by the character of Mose. He’s so odd and quirky and also kinda effeminate?…I just don’t get why he acts like this or what his relationship with any of the character is. Is he just a comic relief character that fell flat for me? I feel like the movie would be better off without him.
