found a strange mussel shell (?) at the beach, anyone know what these system-like intricacies are?

My friend found this at the beach. This shell has an interior of tube like systems, it is hard like the same material of the rest of the shell. I don't know much about sealife, but I would love to know what this is?! It looks like the tubes are fused / melded to the rest of the shell.
