Need Advice: Leaving Belgium Suddenly Due to Emergency - What About My Lease?

Hi Everyone,

I’m a non-EU resident currently living in Antwerp. Unfortunately, I’ve had a sudden family emergency—a death back home—and I need to leave the country immediately. I won’t be returning to Belgium after this.

The issue is that I wasn’t able to inform my landlord in advance about terminating my lease. I’m not sure how to handle this situation now.

• What steps should I take before I leave to minimize the impact on my landlord and myself?
• Are there any potential fines or consequences for breaking the lease in this way?
