Is this Bulgaria?

Title may seem odd, but let me explain. I’m in Varna visiting my dad (who just recently moved here). My experience here has been really iffy. While the culture and generally things to do I’m used to (I’m albanian) and happy with, the people themselves are a different story.

It’s really blatant how Bulgarians see foreigners and don’t want to interact with them. For example, I went to a football pitch and joined some people playing football, and while they themselves were weird, they weren’t welcoming and were just trying to get me to say that America was shit and how good Bulgaria is, constantly switching to speaking Bulgarian to eachother (there was 3 of us), overall not too friendly.
Furthermore the people are really hard to make friends with and approach with how cold they are, especially to foreigners. There was one antique shop owner I tried talking to who looked so bored out of his mind he was peoplewatching out the window, he was incredibly cold and gave me one word answers when I was asking about some of the stuff he had as a collection. Couple that with the fact that everyone looks grumpy as hell I can’t even bring myself to go up to them. My dad says it’s the cold, maybe he’s right. From multiple beggars asking for 20lv to men following me with their hands in their pants to having my candle snuffed out in church, it’s really hard for me to like it here.

Something I really wanted to do in Bulgaria was make friends at a bar or sports place or at least have a conversation with a shop owner on how I get a license plate (it’s something I do) or anything really, but it just felt impossible here with the people here.

I’m just here asking if I’ve done everything I can or maybe I did something wrong, maybe there’s other foreigners who have the same or completely different experience than me. I really want to like Bulgaria and I’ll probably come back soon, but I just want to hear it from someone if this is really what Bulgaria is or if I fucked up and went to the wrong places, wrong people, or just got unlucky.
