should i get one or two chinchillas?

hello, i'm getting a chinchilla and have done research but the one thing i've gotten mixed messages on is if i should get two chins. i'll see things saying they NEED a buddy and will never be happy without one, but then ill see others saying chinchillas don't need friends, and that theirs fought and lost an eye. i will be socializing, and keeping them out as much as possible, if that helps anything.
