How can I keep the AI players at bay

I am new to civ6 and I am having trouble keeping AI players in check. When I rush for one victory they always won ahead of me with another type. Just yesterday I lost to Qin with religious victory while I was rushing for science victory. Please enlighten me with your holy knowledges and experiences.
