Sweet Pea is responding to diet and treatment and visibly improving! I put together this timeline of her. You can find our story below. I’m so happy 🥹🎉
When I first got Sweet Pea, or as I call her p girl, she was the runt. She could barely walk or perch, was stunted and malnourished and abused by her “breeder” and injured by what I assume was her siblings. I took her home and gave her everything she needed to thrive and she did! Unfortunately, her genetics were out of my hands. At 2-3 years old I started to notice her beak over growing increasingly fast until it was out of control. However, with no other symptoms the vet assumed it was due to an early injury. As time went on she developed a feather plucking issue and poor feather condition which was then attributed to anxiety. As raggedy as she looked we loved her all the same and she was the same spicy little bird as always, until about 2 months ago. She began to drop weight rapidly and lost significant muscle mass. I am lucky to have a wonderful avian vet that took her in immediately. As I had suspected for a while little p girl was finally formally diagnosed with genetic liver disease and unknown to me kidney disease as well. After a night at the vet she came home. She has been on a dual prescription diet ever since, as well as daily dandelion/milk thistle extract and omega 3s given by syringe to ensure consumption. She regained her muscle and her feathers are improving infinitely. She stopped plucking and her beak growth has slowed significantly. Her conditions aren’t curable but are manageable and I’m so happy to share her progress with you guys. I didn’t even know if she’d make it to a year old and she’ll be 7 this December. 🥹
