Should basic crocheting be learned prior to trying to crochet plushies, or is that a skill I can learn by itself?

Google gives me mixed opinions. I’d love to hear some more thorough recommendations as to what direction I can take for crocheting plushies! If it helps, I am big on knitting and trying something new.
