"I love you, Al"
My dad has had Lewy Body for about 6 years now. Gift giving was always really important to him, so at Christmas I took him shopping for gifts for my mom and brother.
He's declined a lot in the past couple of months and wasn't up for an outing to shop for Valentine's. I brought a card and some chocolate over to my parents' house this evening so my dad would be able to give my mom something on Wednesday.
I showed him all the options I had brought over and let him pick out what he wanted to give her. I sat him down at the desk with a pen to sign the card. He started at it, started to write, and pulled back several times. "Maybe I should practice" he said. I got out my notebook and he wrote out "I love you, Al" three times. He signed the card and I helped him put it in the envelope.
I know I'm incredibly lucky in some ways. To have a dad who, despite everything, still wants to show he much he loves us. But this really fucking hurts.
