Beginner Drummer Feeling Stuck After 3 Months - Advice on Lessons and Progress?
Hey everyone!
I’m a beginner drummer who started about 3-4 months ago with no prior experience. I’ve been taking weekly lessons and can now play simple songs like Spirits by The Strumbellas. I even performed it at my first open mic last week, which was an amazing experience!
However, I’ve been feeling like my progress is a bit slow for someone who’s been taking lessons for 3 months. My classes don’t seem very structured; we touch on a bit of everything, but I don’t feel like we’re diving deep enough into any one area. For example, my instructor hasn’t introduced me to fills or toms yet, and I’ve been curious about those.
I also have access to Drumeo lessons (they came with my e-kit), but I haven’t started them because I thought it would be better to stick with one method/instructor to avoid getting confused or mixing things up. Now I’m wondering if I should use Drumeo alongside my lessons or just stick with my current instructor and be more patient.
So, I’d love to hear your thoughts:
• Is it normal to feel like this at 3-4 months in?
• Should I supplement my classes with Drumeo, or is it better to trust my instructor’s process?
• What are the best ways to ensure I’m building a strong foundation and improving faster without overwhelming myself?
Thanks in advance for any advice you can share! I really want to make sure I’m on the right track and maximizing my learning.
