Tariffs May Collapse the US
I'm an importer. When I pay a tariff, I enter it into the spreadsheet which includes my mark up. Then when I sell to a dealer, they'll mark up that total price which includes the tariff and my mark up. So 10% becomes 15%? The products I sell are often purchased at 30% of US retail. So even taxed at 100%, the US can't compete.
The result will be Tariff plus 30% or so to the consumer level as a cost. This inflation will land as a cost for manufacturing in the US. It will land on the price point they need to collect in sales. And tariffs will lessen our exports.
Manufacturers that assemble parts here like Harley Davidson are saying the plan to tariff Mexico will break their business model. There are hundreds if not thousands of businesses that will face the same issue. To that end, exports will fall and US strength will go with it.
In the end, there will be more foreign products in the US with less US competition. This will become an economic death spiral for ego over the Industrial Age that died out 40 years ago for the US.
