Do you get used to the smells?
New er tech here. I’m very green and am getting newly acquainted to the sights sounds and especially the smells of the er. I found myself getting squeamish and nearly fainting last shift thanks to the pungent smell of blood from a bad pediatric laceration to the thumb in which the bone was exposed. I absolutely hate the strong metallic blood smell I need to wear my mask and breathe through my mouth. The same goes for strong sweat and this weird sweet smell another patient was giving off (infection?) My question is if you get used to it over time? The near fainting was also a culmination of pain from my finger after crushing it in the railing of a patient’s cart, as well as intense heat, dehydration, and hunger. I can’t help but feel like a dingus for doing so and leaving the nurse to finish the irrigation.
