Expensive machines

I have a basic Bambino and I'm happy with it, but I always wonder what it is that the machines which cost thousands do differently, other than larger machines making more coffees.

I understand they allow you to control the water more, and adjust the pressure, but is that it?

Obviously, you pay more for heritage brands but I'm just curious what justifies the huge cost, especially if you're not in a cafe making hundreds a day.
