Regarding the false Chabad messianic belief that the LR is מלך המשיח, do BTs and converts who become Chabadniks actually believe he was or is the messiah or just going with the flow

Wondering, because I can understand why the born Chabadnikim who were raised in it , can believe that their last and final Rebbe is the messiah, but for Bts and converts who were not raised in Chabad do they really believe in it , or are just going along with it because it’s now a fundamental and normative Chabad belief , and disbelieving in it Chabad circles will obviously cause problems with other Chabadnikm which if not all them are meschitistim?
