ELI5 - What is topology and how does it work?

I recently stumbled upon some videos where people were untangling cables stuck on objects like chairs or desks without moving the objects, just by twisting the cables and turning them in specific ways.

I’m quite intrigued by this and would love to understand how it works. Could someone explain in simple terms what topology is and how it allows things like that?
