Does building wall on the perimeter of your spaceship do anything?

I noticed in almost all the spaceships I see on here most people build walls around the entire perimeter. Is this just for aesthetic reasons or is there a functional purpose to this? I imagine maybe it absorbs a small amount of impact from asteroid collisions that slip through but given the low health of the walls I don't think it really does much so wondering if this is just for looks.
