Help! Shopping for coat for wife.

I'm planning on getting my wife a nice coat as an early Christmas gift. She's from California and since moving to Utah, she's been complaining a lot about the cold. Recently she's been hinting to me that she wants a coat to add to her wardrobe so she doesn't have to layer jackets. The problem for me is I don't know what are good womens coat brands and not. The good news is she isn't partial to any particular brand, the bad news is that it's left me with choice paralysis. What brands should I look at for a good coat under $100.
