Burning things for Malek

It occurred me today that the reason the government requires people to burn the belongings of the deceased in Fourth Wing is because destroying the things we pass down through the generations makes it easier to propagate proganda.

I would bet that this custom only dates back 400 years. Otherwise wouldn't the journal's belonging to the 6 have been burned?
