What are the markings in this piece of shale found on a beach in Nova Scotia?

I found this on a beach near The Ovens, the South Shore of Nova Scotia and can't for the life of me figure out what the markings are on each side of it. One side has more interesting marks, like an hourglass or something while the other side has an X on it.

The stone is 5.5cm x 4 cm
