Advice Needed - Gapping
G'day fellow golfers,
I, like many of you, have recently fallen into the all-consuming beast that is golf. After playing for about eight months, I’ve reached the point where I’m ready to be fitted for a set of irons, upgrading from my current Titleist AP1 716s, which I purchased secondhand from the marketplace.
At this stage - I'm eyeing off the Titleist T200's.
My current dilemma is around the gapping of my clubs at the shorter end and ultimately, the set-up I roll with across my bag.
Right now, I'm operating with a Dr, 3W, 3H, 4I - PW, 52, 56, 60. My PW has 43 degrees of loft, which leaves a huge gap between my PW and GW, with my PW carrying ~130m (143y) and my GW carrying ~100m (110y).
Unfortunately, the T200's (and many similar clubs) come with the same loft on the PW. I'd ideally like to have the PW (43 degrees) and GW (48 degrees) from the iron set for my approach shots, combined with my 52, 56 and 60. I'd like to think that I'm a relatively long hitter (especially considering my handicap) and would prefer more options within 130m of the green and as such, I'm thinking of taking out a long club.
My questions to you are:
- Is 5 wedges overkill and is there an alternative, 4 wedge set up I can roll with?
- Would I be better off having a 4I or 3H/7W in my kit bag? (Note: I feel more comfortable hitting the 4I but admittedly, have not spent enough time hitting my 3H)
Some people might suggest taking out my 3W but that is the long club I feel most comfortable with, both off the tee and off the deck, and would prefer to keep it in my kit bag.
I've also attached my ideal yardages to this post. Admittedly, being a ~20HCP means that I'm only getting pure connection about 50% of the time.
Look forward to hearing your thoughts ⛳
