Do you ever get scammed?

So I've been really really sick for the past 10 days. I had someone message me and offer me a $100 gift card out of the blue. Never heard from this person before and hadn't been online much since I could barely move. Thought - wow, this is awesome. Nothing like this ever happens to me. What a kind person, right? I sort of get excited since it meant I could get inside and warm and have a hot meal which would help me to feel better after the terrible week I've just had. I check the card number and yeah - it WAS a $100 gift card, but there's $.82 left on it. Who does that? I mean, why? I seriously hate people sometimes.
