What makes a good jump scare?

And what are your favourites?

Perhaps controversial as I have seen a lot of people describe them as “cheap” but the jump scares in Skinamarink had me on the edge of my seat the entire movie. It is so slow and dreamy, but after the first jump there was no way I could predict the timing of the next one, so on the one hand I wanted ‘let go’ into the comforting eerieness and on the other I felt hyper vigilant.

The Mulholland Drive one great on the first watch, but the timing gets predictable on rewatching it compared to Skinny where I know it’s gonna happen but it still gets me every time.

On a side note nothing beats that video of a car driving around a valley with a zombie suddenly popping out of nowhere, iconic.

Would love to hear your thoughts on what makes a great jump scare!
