Purchased an iem and terribly disappointed with it

So after hearing a lot of hues and cries about how good IEM headphones are went ahead and bought a kz zex . But my God am I disappointed . They sound tinny compared to ... dare I say my regular samsung akg buds ?? Like wtf . Is this because I am putting it up against a mid range smartphone? If yes suggest me a cheap dac . If not , suggest me some eq settings or another iem that has a sound curve similar to regular consumer headphones .
