Grief, but also rage.

The first time I went camping in Jasper was in 1984 at under a year old.

The last time I went camping in Jasper was last week.

It's been my happy place my whole life. From high school ski trips to my honeymoon, it's full of memories in addition to natural beauty and wonder.

I am devestated by this.

But I am also angry. It was the hottest day EVER recorded on this planet on Sunday. Scientists started warning about climate change decades ago. I've been aware of it and voiced my concerns about it as a citizen since I was in my teens. I am in my 40s now and horrified at what inaction has led to.

I am angry at all the politicians that have been downplaying or even denying the scientists for decades. I am angry at the fossil fuel industry and the oil industry cronyism and the taxpayer funded propaganda (War Room).

I am angry for residents of Fort Mac, Lytton, West Kelowna and Jasper who have lost their homes to fire. I am angry for the bears and elk and other critters fleeing the flames. I am angry for the Parks Canada staff who knew this could happen and have done their best to prepare.

Forest fires are normal and natural in Jasper. The combination of heat wave and drought that created this particular fire situation is not.

I'm grieving for Jasper, but I'm also furious.
