Space above fridge - what to do?

Previous owner’s renovations resulted in this gap between fridge and ceiling. Our ceilings are high (old house) so I understand why they built it out for the cabinets (to the right). But I don’t understand why they didn’t do anything at all above the fridge area.

It’s just occurred to me how awkward the space is. What to do? If we get new cabinets and keep same layout, would it even look right to put a cabinet above the fridge? It’d either not line up with the others or it’d look super shallow compared to the fridge.
