Stanning kpop as a concept vs stanning individual groups
There's a kpop writer catching some heat on Twitter for voicing frustration about people only stanning one or two groups rather than the entirety of kpop as a whole. I see the arguments that some get into about multis and how it's viewed as lesser than if you only listen to a single group and the responses to the journalist got me thinking about why.
I've been following a single group for six years. Over that time I've seen a lot of discussions about how people got into kpop, who their first group was vs who they ult now. To me it felt like if you're a fan of kpop as a concept your ult group changes with the generations. Yeah, you might still listen to those old Big Bang songs sometimes, but you later invested yourself into EXO and now only fully support Ateez. SNSD was your first crush, BP was your first obsession, but you've left them behind for NewJeans and haven't looked back. And I'm not saying that's necessarily a bad thing but it definitely adds to the whole expiration date idea that exists in kpop.
I think that's where the animosity towards multis comes from? Like you're "not a real fan" if you're going to put them on the back burner the second something younger and shinier (with that sweet, sweet underdog storyline) comes along.
And just to be clear, I'm not saying that's what I believe. One of my best friends is a huge multi and I've never questioned their love for the group we share. I'd love to hear thoughts from both multis and those who only stan one group, maybe y'all can articulate it better than I can 😅
