Defer law school for a job opportunity?
Hi guys, I think I’m going to get a job offer from a federal public defender office for a legal assistant position. I’m in the middle of applying to law schools, but they don’t want to hire someone who’s going to school in less than a year.
I feel ready to move on with my life and get back to school (I graduated from college in 2022) but also I’m not trying to hold myself to any timelines and be open to opportunities as they come my way.
I’m generally interested in public interest law but haven’t determined a specific area, so I’m genuinely interested in the position and seeing what the work of a public defender looks like.
But I’m also a 20 something who has no clue what she’s doing with her life, so like… I don’t know if it’s worthwhile putting off school for this if I’m not gunning to be a big hotshot attorney. At the end of the day, I just wanna return to my rural state and have a secure life, work life balance, and a job where I can help some people out.
What are your thoughts? Would you offer to defer law school a year for an opportunity like this?
(And if there’s a better place to post this, lmk!)
Edit to add: I’ve had a really weird and difficult year so I’m having a hard time having clarity on anything or my path in life.
