Cornell "Let's Talk" Admissions Session Recap/Info
I attended the first and second "Let's Talk" admissions sessions with Dean Cooper. First of all, super super nice guy, and incredibly helpful info session. While I totally understand that not all law schools can be like Harvard in terms of their admissions timeline transparency, I wish that more offered these sorts of "roundtable" talks to answer questions about the admissions process.
There was a lot discussed (which many people, especially if you frequent this Reddit, may already know), but here is what stuck out to me:
- Kira interviews can result in being put on reserve. (I previously thought that it would just lead to a WL as a comparable outcome.)
- Dean Cooper specifically mentioned several times that the longer you stay on the waitlist, the better odds you have in the sense that you are expressing more flexibility about attending on shorter notice, and that he strongly recommends that you stay in touch with adcomms, even if it's just a reminder that you are still interested and want to attend as they lead up to the school year.
- He does not encourage people to go out of their way or any extreme lengths to demonstrate interest i.e. visiting campus or attending these sessions as a way to improve their chances.
- They are currently reviewing mid-December Kira interviews.
- Last year, 33% of their 1L class were KJDs. He said that they did not do this purposefully, but at this point in the cycle, also about 33% of admitted students are KJDs.
