Undergrad Seeking Project Guidance

Hello! I'm currently a second year undergrad studying Data Science, and I'm feeling a bit lost. I managed to secure a decent research position under a professor at my university, but I feel as though I'm mostly doing clerical work that isn't teaching me anything substantive.

I was in a few clubs my Freshman year where I worked on some fairly basic projects (simple PyTorch stock picker), but I'm looking to build something on my own. I'm wondering what types of models, technologies or strategies I should try to implement for this project. I'd ideally like to break into deep learning, and I'm wondering where I should look to start.
