Solution to a peeling steering wheel?

Within the last 30 000km I've noticed my steering wheel wearing at the top. I have a 2014 Mazda 3 with 200 000km on it. I'd rather not buy one of those steering wheel covers because they're bulky, would this wear be covered under warranty?

Has anyone else been having this issue with their steering wheel?

Note: The steering wheel is not leather.
