People are overreacting to bans
I keep seeing posts everywhere about the bans of Jeweled Lotus and Mana Crypt and the overall sentiment seems to be anger at the Rules Committee due to the lost money.
Here’s why people are overreacting and the bans are great for Commander:
Modern magic cards shouldn’t be seen as investments. In a game like magic, where cards are valuable due to power level and new cards are continuously getting printed, you should never “invest” in a card because it’s strong. There are some outliers in which cards have special treatments but in that case you’re investing because of the art which is similar to how Pokémon functions.
These cards were absolutely egregious designs. The original intent of commander was/is a slower format in which you casually play with a group of your friends/strangers. Most people can’t afford to drop 150$ on a single card and these cards often warped a 1v1v1v1 format to a 3v1. In addition, they’re colorless, so every deck if built optimally would have ran a jeweled lotus and mana crypt destroying the uniqueness of the format. Lastly, they come out on turn 1 which prevents players from interacting.
The rules committee isn’t WOTC. They didn’t design the cards and they didn’t profit off the cards. These cards should have been banned forever ago and thus should have never been as expensive as they were at the time of banning.
Addressing other comments:
“Yeah but Sol Ring” - It’s a 1$ card AND literally the face of the format. It’s about as commander as having a creature in your command zone. Yes, it’s strong and busted but banning it would render all precons illegal which blocks most new players from entering the format.
“Yeah but CEDH” - Make your own banlist… I don’t have any sympathy. Most of y’all wanted hullbreacher to not be banned and as a causal player, that card was MISERABLE.
“Yeah but Thassa’s Oracle” - Yes this card sucks, should be banned and I don’t agree with the “we don’t see this in the wild in casual as often so it’s not banned”
Word of advice - sell your One Rings
