Spaces and Meaning in Mumbai.
I (25F) was born and raised in Bombay. Over the years, despite my undying efforts to romanticize the city, I’ve found myself falling out of love with it. The chaos and energy that once felt electric now feels suffocating. Feeling part of a whole once felt special, now I just feel incredibly lost. And maybe I fear being forgotten.
However, it's less to me thinking about how we treat spaces in this city. How do 'spaces' transform into 'places'? Particularly those “non-places” we often overlook - like a bus stop, a train compartment, a flyover, a pavement, or a traffic signal. Do spaces become places simply because humans inhabit them in meaningful ways? Or can a space in Bombay, even amidst all the madness, hold its own meaning and identity without us imposing it?
So, my fellow Mumbaikars, I ask you: which of these overlooked non-places hold meaning for you or bring you an inexplicable sense of comfort? What spots make this city feel a little less overwhelming, maybe even a little less lonely?
TL;DR: How do spaces turn into places in Mumbai? Especially non-places? Are there such spaces or places that hold meaning to you?
