Non-Americans of the sub: how much community musical theatre there is in your country?
I know a lot of people in this sub are performers or otherwise involved in community theatre. What I've been wondering is how many of you live in countries other than the USA? I'm from Finland and one of the few things I envy Americans about is how much community musical theatre there seems to be. I would love to perform in a musical one day, but the opportunities are pretty limited here since international musicals are mostly done by professional theatres and actors. On the one hand it's great because the productions are almost always high-quality and worth the expense of the ticket. The musicals performed by community theatres (in my city at least) are usually jukebox shows containing songs by some Finnish band, otherwise it's straight plays. As a teenager I did perform in a few plays aimed at children and they contained some songs, but could hardly be called musicals.
Logically, it makes sense that community musicals are not popular here: we only have a population of about 5 million and musicals need not only actors who can sing and possibly dance, but musicians as well. The costumes are also often more elaborate than in straight plays. Still, I want to hold onto my hope while singing showtunes all day long and probably annoying my neighbours...
This turned out longer than I expected, but anyway, I'd be so interested to hear about the status of community musicals in your country!
