Gender in music
Why in 2025 are there still so many male musicians who invalidate women in music?
I’ve been performing for 14 years and in my first band I was told “women could never be real musicians.”
5 years ago I walked into Guitar Center with my guitar, my bf at the time was behind me. I set my guitar on the counter, and the tech turned to my boyfriend and said “what are we doing today?” Jfc..
Haha I’m too susceptible to taking the bait when lame ass music bros talk down on non-male musicians, but I just know a lot of people in the industry who are genuinely not impressed with that kind of behavior. I guess they’ll learn that for themselves (or find success with ladders built by people just like them.)
I’ve toured Medium Build, played with Portugal. The Man, opened for Hiatus Kaiyote, Crumb, Durand Jones and the Indications, Black Belt Eagle Scout, I’m supported by Macklemore’s team, and I’m getting some advice from a member of the Decemberists, and all of those people are actually nice. They don’t think it’s cool to treat female musicians as lesser. I just fucking hope this changes someday.
