What happened with federiefederi

A lot of people won't care, but I found it at least a little interesting. If you don't know already then you probably won't care. If you're curious as to why they disappeared off your page, well, here's why.

Credit to Crackworth's for documenting this very well. I'd recommend reading their write-up about the topic.

TL;DR: federiefederi is banned, and they aren't coming back.

For those who aren't aware, "federiefederi" (archive) was the name of a Neocities website created in late 2023 that aimed to promote other Neocities users, especially those with low view counts. Whether or not they did this well is unknown to me - I only followed them for a short time.

They weren't exactly well-liked, though, for a few reasons:

The original method of getting your website featured involved you following them. If you did not follow them, you wouldn't be featured. In return, they would follow you back and add your site button to their page. This follow-for-follow behavior would come back to bite them later.

Because so many people followed them and interacted with them, when a comment was posted on their wall - which was often - it would spam everyone. If an announcement was posted, tons of people would respond, resulting in long comment chains.

This wasn't entirely the fault of the webmaster(s), just the result of having a popular page that, due to its nature, resulted in people asking tons of questions ("why weren't I added?" "what's allowed?" "can you feature my project?"). They were also known to comment on Neocities users' pages attempting to recruit them into joining and therefore supporting their project.

So what happened?

On April 8th, 2024, federiefederi made an announcement that they would be unfollowing everyone. Their reasoning was that they aimed to get to the top of the homepage on Neocities, and the following-to-follower ratio (supposedly) affected that. This would be the wrong move, as on April 16th, an anonymous lolcow . farm user posted an image of their report to Neocities informing them of federiefederi's behavior.

So, that's the end of them, for the most part. I again point to Crackworth's page about the topic, as it showcases some e-mail exchanges with the pair...allegedly. It is unknown whether these exchanges were with the real federiefederi. They're...interesting, to say the least, and the typing style, quirks, and attitude line-up very closely with the real deal.

Don't do follow-for-follow schemes and drive, kids.
