What Do I Do??

Just woke up from my sleep and realized I messed up something. Last night, when I was on another unit, I realized that I never pulled the urinary catheter from my patient after they came from surgery. They spent the whole night with it in. I got report on this patient about 10 minutes after they got back from surgery from the off coming nurse who got report on him from the PACU.

I feel pretty dumb about this. I was wondering about how long I was supposed to keep it in as I saw no specific orders about the foley (probably since the order for it was expired) and didn’t pay it much mind because of how busy my night was. I know it’s not a life or death situation but it can be a serious barrier to getting him discharged (we’re in surge so we need beds) as well as the implications there are with infection. I feel like I’ve been in nursing for too long to have allowed that to happen. How do I go about handling this?
