Resale value of stuff

I'm British. I've been her for a long time and it still baffles me that kiwis expect so much money for second hand things.

Can someone explain the logic to me where people try and sell second hand items for fractionally cheaper or the same price as new. If you buy new, you get the warranty and guarantee from the company the product is good for x amount of time. This doesn't come with a private sale, so you loose your money if it breaks. So the price requested should reflect this risk.

Similarly the argument of "but I paid full price for it" when it's now 40% off.... Yes. But it's now far cheaper cause you didn't wait for a sale, so you don't get to charge more for the item cause you couldn't wait for it.

And whilst I'm ranting, crappy furniture (which is almost everything sold here) being horrendously expensive! Wtf. I know this makes me sound horrifically cheap. I'm more than happy to pay good money for good shit, but that just doesn't seem to happen here. It's good money for shit and ALL the money for good shit, be that new or second hand.
