Did you leave nursing for a totally different career? Tell me your story!

I have been a nurse almost ten years now. 2 as Med-Surg, 3 as a float (ICU, IVT, ER, MS), and now 4.5 in the ER. I am struggling with severe burnout (again). In the past I transitioned roles in the hospital (see above), but I can’t stop daydreaming of a life outside of bedside. Every shift is a mental, physical, and emotional marathon. I have reached a point where I’d even look at going back to school… if I knew what I wanted to do. I am aware of research, med device sales, etc. I toy with the idea of going to the PACU to “retire”. But I keep dreaming of a life where I do something totally outside of nursing…and yet I cling to my 0.75 FTE because I love the schedule.

For those of you who left bedside for a new career - what are you doing now? How did you make your transition? I’d love to hear your story. Even if you DID go to med device or something, if you’re loving your life - tell me why!
