Tounges in Outlast 2

I was playing the Outlast series yesterday after a long time and I noticed that there are a lot of Tounge references in Outlast 2. For example the tounge pulling Blake in the well, the one in the telephone, the one in the school Pool and the Loutermilch demon who is basically only tounges to only name a few. Is there a reason for this?
