[Healthcare] Struggling to decide between bronze, silver, or platinum plan
My work offers many health plan options, about 25 of them. I've narrowed it down to three: a bronze plus plan, a silver plan, and a platinum plan. This would be for coverage for myself, my wife, and our daughter. Another child is possible but unlikely in the next year. I get paid biweekly (26 paychecks per year). Total tax rate 31.65%. I've plugged numbers into the spreadsheet here and remain very undecided. The chart seems to always lean towards HDHP, especially once I commit to HSA contributions, so maybe the answer is there and I'm just hesitant since I'm covering my daughter now too.
My wife is more risk averse and is leaning towards platinum.
The cost breakdown is as follows:
Platinum:
Per pay period: $ 280.53
Individual/Family deductible: 250/500
Coinsurance: 85.00%
Out of pocket maximum: 2300/4600
Silver:
Per pay period: $ 84.66
Family deductible: $ 3,000.00
Coinsurance: 75.00%
Out of pocket maximum: $ 7,600.00
Premium savings versus platinum: $5,092.62 (included as a potential HSA contribution number)
Bronze Plus:
Per pay period: $ 37.40
Family deductible: $ 4,900.00
Coinsurance: 75.00%
Out of pocket maximum: $ 7,800.00
Premium savings versus platinum: $6,321.38 (included as a potential HSA contribution number)
We've been on a bronze plan since a qualifying event made us eligible to choose a plan in September. We contribute $0 per pay period for it. My wife had some unforeseen expenses which will end costing us about $1000. She balked at this cost, but I see the alternative as having been $280 per pay period for the past 2 months, so a guaranteed $840 (3 pay periods) plus the deductible. Am I thinking about this all wrong?
