What does classical Pilates mean to you?
I personally think of Romana's Pilates as "classical" because it was her cult that spread it in the 90's. No one was talking about Kathy Grant of Eve Gentry, etc. as much as they were trying to sell the idea that Romana's was the only legitimate Pilates for decades.
I taught a Romana's Pilates instructor in her 60's what some call an 'archival excercise' she had never learned before after also teaching her that Romana had made up some variations of excerciss (who didnt), it's clear to me that some folks don't actually look at the archived images and that was actually part of my training before people were even saying 'archival Pilates' and yet this person who's been teaching for 30 years knows less about this history than I ....yeah, there a lot of that out there.
I view classical Pilates as anything that was taught by one of the core elders. Ya know ...the people who actually trained with the guy. Those people were taught his repertoire and were additionally given excercises that he created specifically for them, but to be honest I don't like the term and it's outdated. I think traditional is a better term because it speaks to keeping with traditions which works for any original lineage.
