How to respond?

Owner of a pittie puppy (approx 9 month old rescue). We live in an apartment complex and he always wants to run and jump to say hi to people and dogs. We’ve gotten him started with training classes so we’re working on his reaction (which so far has always been friendly if a bit too overexcited) but how do you fellow pittie owners respond when someone makes an ignorant comment regarding your dogs breed? I was walking him into our building earlier tonight when I heard people coming down the hallway. I pulled my dog over to the side so they had plenty of room to walk past us in the lobby and made him sit. He (again new to training) sat between my legs initially but did jump when they walked past. I had a tight hold on his slip lead and made him sit again. As they walk by, one of the women says “oh no, better get control of your dog. Stupid people get a pit bull and can’t even control it”. I was more focused on making sure my dog stayed sitting but that comment really made me mad. I KNOW this breed has a bad rep and so there are many misconceptions about them and that’s why I want to train him so he has positive interactions. I’m very clearly trying to teach and train him- I have the treat pouch on, was giving verbal commands, & had a tight hold of his lead. I know I probably shouldn’t feel this frustrated and it’s bound to happen again, but do you respond or just ignore it?
