So, I made a farming spreadsheet....

... and Farming seems kind of bad at the moment? Don't get me wrong, farming in b41 was completely busted. You could basically feed your character with like 8 plots of cabbage, but this is the completely opposite direction.

Let's look at the data: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1YuTvVM_CvMtuoApm4xduosSwuglWS7F2xbQcrvsIo-Q/edit?usp=sharing

(note: I think this is not complete, still missing growth times for some flowers etc.)

The current issues I see:

  • Growth times are really long. I can probably count on one hand my characters that survived for 240 days outside of MP servers, and even the 60-90 day range feels longer than the averaga playthrough. Longer time also means more chances to get affected by plant diseases.
  • Unless the harvest amount drastically changes from self planted crops, harvest per field is incredibly low. I found some vast caabbage fields near a farm and got 1-2 cabbages per patch. Given that seed packages have 5 seeds that's not even enough to get you through a week.
  • Given the default start is in July the vast majority of crops either can't be planted at all or are in a bad planting month. With the lower amount of loot it's a real gamble if you actually find seeds to any of the "in season" crops.
  • Farming XP is currently only gained from harvesting your own crops (and that one L&L show) - so getting any meaningful farming level will probably take years or huge farms - or finding the right seeds.
  • Talking about seeds: seed returns from Blooming crops also seem really low - not enough to sustain planting unless you then destroy some of your crops to get more seeds from them.

I like all the variety of new crops, but at the moment it really does not seem worth bothering with. Most of these growing times are probably "realistic", but if realism means that it's not worht engaging with that game mechanic then maybe it's not in the right spot.
